Shiseido is not only the eastern brand name of cosmetics to enter worldwide market scale in cosmetics, Shiseido Company, Ltd also happens to be the oldest cosmetics company in the whole world.
It all started with a former head pharmacist to the Japanese Imperial Navy, Arinobu Fukuhara, establishing a small pharmaceutics outlet upon retiring his services from the Japanese navy. That was in 1872 when the name Shiseido Pharmacy was entered into the registry of businesses in Japan. Arinobu Fukuhara later made journeys to the West and in Europe, acquiring in the process a soda fountain, which is later, added into the store. Later on, Shiseido Pharmacy became, Shiseido Parlour, catering to hungry Japanese eager to try the newest sensation from the west, which is ice cream. Of course, as a pharmaceuticals company, Shiseido kept maintenance of cosmetic line, white face powders so prevalent in usage by the Japanese ladies during these times. Then there was a softening lotion developed, a topical substance that can be seen in today’s light as a variant of skin toner, with the same consistency. Both these products marked the earliest success of Shiseido in the realm of cosmetics; and the Eudermine is still manufactured and sold in all Shiseido outlets.
In 1923, Shiseido began expanding in scope nationwide, by this time accounting for some 25,000 outlets. Shortly a joint stock was offered and formed. Shiseido was ready for the world.
Sometime in 1957, Shiseido began expanding into the southeastern territories, first with Taiwan then to Singapore then to Hong Kong. In 1962, Shiseido made a huge leap to the western territory, making landfall first at Hawaii then to America in 1965. In the following close years, Shiseido became integrated in the Italian economy and Oceania including New Zealand in 1971.
From being an exclusively national brand name in 1872 to being a worldwide cosmetics dealer in around 1965, Shiseido started slowly then rapidly expanded in such short notice. One rationale behind the impressive growth is the marvelous lineup of Shiseido skin care products known for their quality and superiority to other brand names.
