When an AHA –filled skin care product is applied to the skin, there is a tendency that the skin will peel especially those that are high in concentration. AHA comes in many forms--- glycolic acid, lactic acid, and citric acid.

Glycolic acid is sourced from sugar cane and considered as the most used among the three because of its known efficacy. The lactic acid is produced from milk and perhaps the mildest acid among the AHAs. It is less irritating, hence preferred by people who have sensitive skin. Legends has it that Cleopatra owes her supple skin from the gallons of sour milk she used to dip in with. Perhaps the popularity of lactic acid as a skin care liquid must have come from this story. The last among the AHAs, the citric acid is derived from citrus fruit. Fruit extracts are the rich sources of citric acid.

For anyone who really wants to achieve a youthful looking and smooth skin with use of AHA, moderation is always the rule of thumb. Just in any endeavor, anything in excess could be harmful instead of bringing goodness. With AHA, there is always a right dosage recommended for each individual. Failure to follow the prescribed dosage will put the skin in great risk of the side effects. Skin irritation, flaking, and redness are few of the obvious side effects. One the other and chemicals used for peeling with high concentration of AHA, can cause damage to the skin like blistering, discoloration, and burning.

The use of exfoliators should only be needed on a regular basis. Once or twice a week is mostly recommended to optimally achieve the healthy skin that anyone has been dreaming of.
