At some point in your life, you may very well develop calluses of your own. And this is a problem shared by a lot of people worldwide. But what exactly is a callus? And what about it just ticks off a lot of people?
A callus is actually a slab of skin that has become thick over a long period of time. But what makes this area of skin thick? This is actually because that area of skin has encountered constant pressure over that long period of time. Because of this repeated pressure, the skin starts to harden, and gradually becomes thicker and thicker. In due time, the skin becomes a very hard layer, and becomes a bit yellowish in color. And the skin would also become rough to the feel. When this happens, then a callus has already formed.
The most common of all would be the foot callus. And this kind of callus is very painful because you would have no choice but to step on it. Most time, a foot callus would develop on the ball of the foot or the heel. They can also develop on the foot’s large toe. This kind of callus is typically caused by the wearing of extremely tight shoes. These tight shoes exert a lot of pressure on your foot, thus, amounting to a lot of stress on your feet. And when a foot callus develops, chances are, it would be a very hard one. And getting rid of hard callus is indeed a very tasking job to do.
The most effective way of dealing with calluses is avoiding them altogether. But if the calluses are already there, then callus removal should then become the focus. As mentioned, it is very hard getting rid of hard callus. And the same goes even if you are getting rid of hard callus at home. But it’s actually better to be doing this at home, so that you would be doing this more comfortably. In fact, there really is no immediate need to get a professional callus remover of sort.
So, how do you go about getting rid of hard callus? The first thing to do would be to soak the callus in warm water. The warm water should be mixed with soap as well. Soak the callus for 15 minutes at the very least. After, you can now start scraping your callus. This may sound painful, but it actually is not that painful. This is because you can use a callus remover, even an electric callus remover, when going through this process. This item looks just like a razor, only it is designed to scrape calluses. Just follow the directions when using the callus remover.
When you are done scraping, you should then move on to smoothing out the rough skin left. This can be done by using a pumice stone. Aside from the pumice stone, you can also use pads that have salicylic acid in rubbing your callus. The salicylic acid helps in shedding off dead skin cells. These pumice stones and salicylic acid pads can be bought from just about anywhere, in pharmacies and such.
But if you do not feel comfortable about removing your callus on your own, you can also seek professional help. Your physician can indeed help you in removing your callus for you. Also, once your callus is removed, you should try your best in avoiding getting one again. And you can do this by wearing shoes that don’t fit you snugly, so that your feet would not be too cramped and pressured inside the shoes. You can also discuss questions and concerns about calluses with your physician. Your physician will be glad to assist you with them.
