Commercial, and often synthetic, body lotions are flooding beauty supply stores and making all sorts of promises to transform dull and lifeless skin into silky soft and radiant-looking skin. Cosmetology companies often use salon-pampered models to endorse body creams or body lotions, which by the way, never fail to awe consumers. Yet, we all know these are all just techniques of advertising.
The effectiveness of synthetic lotions at helping to keep your skin healthy can be tested by not using commercial body lotions for about 2-3 days then observe what happens to your skin. Healthy skin should not easily show signs of dryness even after you've stopped using synthetic lotions for only a few days. Another compelling reason to stop using commercial body lotions is the growing number of evidence indicating that some ingredients in body lotions are enlisted as among the carcinogenic elements.
But our skin needs the quenching effect of moisturizers, right? Moisturizing your skin is a must if you want to delay signs of aging. Why not make handmade body lotions? By doing so, you yourself are in control of the kind of ingredients you put on your skin. Topical solutions as they are, any ingredient in synthetic body lotions are absorbed into the blood stream and enter the circulatory system. So you bet all those parabens, laurel sulphate, petrolatum, and other synthetic substances have found their way into your cells.
On the other hand, a homemade natural body lotion is not only inexpensive, but it's packed with all the essential nutrients that revitalize your skin. When you read the back labels of commercial body lotions with all those ingredients, you'd be lulled into thinking how difficult it is to make them yourself. Surprisingly, some of the ingredients in a homemade, bath and body lotion can be found right in your own kitchen. The fact that they are organic, these ingredients will work harmoniously with your system rather than send it into confusion.
Here are a few delicious and healthy natural body lotion recipes:
To begin making your organic body lotion, use water, an emulsifier, and oil (preferably virgin vegetable oil) for your base (yes, it's that easy!). An emulsifier is a substance you need to blend water and oil efficiently (as they almost never do). Specifically, you can follow this base ingredient or pattern your own ingredient from it.
Mix ½ cup distilled water, ½ cup oil (from olive, macadamia, almond, or grape seed), and 1 TBS liquid lecithin. At this point, it is your prerogative to combine other essential oils or steep herbs (such as green tea) in the water before mixing the oil and other ingredients in.
As a starter, you can make this is winter homemade body lotion using the following: ½ cup distilled water, ½ cup olive oil, 1 TBS, 6-8 drops of geranium oil, 2-4 drops Myrhh oil, 400 IU Vitamin E oil (1-2 gel capsules). Combine everything in a clean bowl and apply all over the body as needed.
Geranium oil helps support the skin's pH balance, rejuvenates dry, wrinkled, and matured skin. Myrrh oil is effective at replenishing and sealing moisture. Vitamin E is an excellent antioxidant to assist your skin and body in expelling toxin accumulations, and is also used as a preservative in this case. Store the mixture in the refrigerator in hotter climates or in cold places.
Another simple body lotion recipe is mixing one part glycerin into 10 parts of distilled water. Consistency may vary depending on needs but the thinner it is, the better it will be. Apply this all over the body each time after you take a bath to seal in moisture.
Using the above ingredients described as base, you can be creative in making your own natural, organic body lotions at home.
