Astringents

If you are suffering from an oily skin, chances are your skin is prone to pimples and blackheads. When you have an oily skin, your sebaceous glands are working overactive thus producing more oil than what is needed. For some, the presence sebum (the medical word for natural skin oils) may just be a curse. However, what they don’t know about is that Mother Nature created them to serve a more beneficial purpose

The Good

Under typical situations, sebaceous glands should play a useful role of lubricating your hair and skin, protecting it from environmental factors such as dehydration due to excessive exposure to sunlight. The right amount of skin oils help in maintaining one’s overall health and luster.

The Bad

When it is more than the usual, that’s when it becomes bad. Too much sebum is produced thus making it a real problem. Oily skin affects a person’s self esteem and one’s over-all appearance. Having an oily skin can be very uncomfortable and unacceptable. Aside from the fact that your skin is greasy, this type of skin also easily develops blemishes. The true cause of oily skin is depending on one’s genetic make up.

If you have been praying that your oily skin will vanish over night and be replaced by a radiant and smooth skin, you might want to go for a more realistic approach. However, eliminating excess skin oils must be done carefully. It will be vital not to give your oily skin a traumatic experience.

Elimination of excess oils can be done in so much ways you can’t even imagine. But of course, it also comes with a price. If are seeking for a much affordable alternative, then I would suggest astringents. An astringent is an external cleanser that disinfects your skin by decreasing the amount of natural oils which is the main cause of pimples. There are different types of astringents that you can find almost anywhere. However, when choosing one, you should consider facial astringent for oily skin.

If you think that astringents only serve this purpose, think again. In fact, astringent substance has several well-known medical purposes. In medical, not dermatological term, astringents are composed of strong chemical substances that are responsible for the shrinkage of body tissues. Medicinal astringent causes contraction of exposed body tissues or mucous membranes to internally check serum discharges when one has a sore throat, diarrhea, peptic ulcer, or even hemorrhage.

Externally or topically applied astringents causes’ mild coagulation of substances from the skin which dries and protect the skin. That’s why some dermatologist recommends people with oily skin to use astringents because they have the capacity of drying. The drying effect of astringents is cause by its component – mainly alcohol. Alcohol substances are deemed to absorb moisture and cause dryness. For a person with a normal skin, this is not necessary but for someone with active sebaceous glands, this can be an alternative that can be used all day long.

Of course we all know that too much of anything is bad. Astringents are known to cause dryness which sometimes grounds for irritation and redness. So with all means possible, over usage of such should be avoided. Astringents may be helpful but always remember that they just give out temporary relief nothing in long-term. If you want to get rid of oiliness for good, you may want to go to a local dermatologist and check better options. More or less, a surgical procedure is recommended for severe cases.

Astringents have been the long indulgence to lessen the amount of skin oils. It may be one solution but it is certainly not all.
